A PLACE FOR BOOKS

All of a sudden, it seems, Josephine's things have taken over our little home. The pre-baby me was pretty type-A about being organized and tidy. I am a big believer in the idea that everything must have its place. While that crazy type-A lady is often times screaming on the inside, I have done a pretty good job of just dealing with the fact that the house will never stay as meticulously clean and organized as I would like, and just plain old finding peace with the mess. The book situation in Josephine's bedroom, however, is a completely different story. We had her books all nicely piled and organized on the nightstand and on the trunk by her window. This was all well and good until she became mobile and found it fun to pull every book on to the floor. Ohmygoodness the mess! Every evening it was the same routine of piling the books back in their place just for the same thing to happen the next day. I love that she loves her books, don't get me wrong, but we clearly needed a better means for keeping the book mess a bit more under control. Another piece of furniture would just overwhelm the room, so a bookcase just wasn't an option. Enter the most amazing Ikea hack!
I was so excited when I came across this idea on Handmade Charlotte. Spice racks as book shelves, genius! We took a little trip over to Ikea last weekend, and for just sixteen bucks (plus some craft paint I had on hand) we now have a functional and cute place for all of Josephine's books. I seriously get giddy every time I walk into her room and see the shelves. They are that good! We keep board books on the two lowest shelves so they are easily accessible to her and the more "fragile" books are up higher. As her preferences change we can swap books out and move things around. And the best part, the clean-up is so much easier!

So what do you all think? Have you tackled any Ikea hacks lately? Whenever I come across one of these genius hacks I always get that "why didn't I think of that?!?" feeling!

  1. Aah, I love it! We wanted to do this exact thing in Micha's room, but those shelves weren't available at Ikea for a quite some months, it was so frustrating. We ended up using those art shelves with a rim, but I wish we could've gone with our old plan. Especially after seeing such a cute example!
