DIY CHILDREN'S BOOK COSTUMES

One of my favorite parts about Halloween is handing out candy and ooh-ing and ah-ing at all of the cute costumes. Some kids have the best costumes! I am always impressed by the ones that you can tell a lot of thought went in to. Growing up, my mom always made our costumes...Rainbow Brite and a Crayola Crayon are two that immediately come to mind. So maybe that's why I am always drawn to the do-it-yourself variety. Last Halloween we didn't get a single trick-or-treater. Not a one. Such a bummer! No cute costumes to fawn over, and a whole lot of leftover candy. Josephine was born two days later, though, so all that candy was handed out to guests stopping by to meet her. Ha!

I know Halloween will quickly become one of those big deal holidays now that I am a mom. I have been thinking about what (if anything) I will dress Josephine as this year. Since she's too young to really appreciate the holiday, the costume will mostly be for the cute pictures...let's be honest. I really love the idea of choosing a costume based on a favorite children's book. When Josephine is older that will definitely be a go-to idea! In the meantime, I had so much fun putting together these DIY costumes straight from some of my favorite children's books. Most of the items, besides some of the little props, are things that your little one can wear again. A huge plus. And, you might even own some of the things already!

At what age did you start dressing up your little one for Halloween? What was your favorite costume as a child?

  1. I love these ideas! Especially the Olivia one. I'm so bummed Halloween isn't really a 'thing' here in Holland, I would love to have an excuse to dress my little guy up in a fun costume!
