PREGNANCY MUST HAVES


Now that I am in the home stretch of this pregnancy I have found that there are some items that have become essential to my day-to-day routine. Most of these items I use on a daily basis, and have really made these last couple of months (where I have been feeling more "pregnant" everyday) more comfortable and more bearable. I always love reading what other women found useful during pregnancy, so thought I would make my own little list.

1. The Snoogle: Ladies, this is the first item on my list for a reason. This pregnancy/body pillow has been a life-saver! Before the Snoogle came in to my life, I had a very hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep. My back hurt from sleeping on my side, and I found myself constantly adjusting the five million pillows I needed to sleep with. What I love about this particular pillow is that I can use it to support my belly and my back while I sleep. I literally sleep like a baby now (minus the nightly trips to the bathroom...haven't found a cure for that yet!) I wish I had purchased this pillow sooner than I did, which was only about a month ago. It's a bit pricey, but has been worth every penny!

2. Shea Butter: When I became pregnant my skin got super dry. I started moisturizing with shea butter, religiously, every night and that really seemed to help with the itchy, dryness. I also use this as an eye cream at night and as a cuticle cream. The only downside is that is a bit greasy, but I really only use it at night so it hasn't been too much of an issue.

3. Quality Maternity Denim: I held off buying a pair of maternity jeans for as long as possible. I thought that I could just wear my regular pants with a belly band and that would be that. I was wrong. I found myself constantly pulling at the band and worrying that my pants were going fall down or that the band wouldn't adequately cover the fact that my pants were completely unbuttoned and unzipped. I purchased 2 pairs of gap maternity jeans (one skinny and one bootcut) and I wear them all the time. I am so much more comfortable and the peace of mind of knowing that your pants aren't going to fall down has been more than worth it. Totally worth the investment, in my opinion!

4. Jane Iredale BB Cream: I have been one of those unlucky pregnant women blessed with some pretty bad acne. I am not one to wear a ton of makeup, and wanted something that would cover my blemishes that didn't feel cakey or make me look too made up. This BB Cream fit the bill. It is  mineral-based and contains a sunscreen that is considered safe for pregnancy, which I love! It isn't cheap, but the tube is rather large and a little goes a long way.

5. Maxi Skirts/Maxi Dresses: Another piece of clothing that should be in every pregnant lady's wardrobe...especially if you find yourself pregnant during the summer months. I love being able to just throw on a maxi skirt with a tank top, or a maxi dress and head out the door. They make dressing a growing belly effortless!

6. Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup: I picked this up when I purchased the BB Cream, and I love how it covers my imperfections without feeling heavy or looking like I have a lot of makeup on. It is free of all of those yucky things (parabens, talc, oil) that really aren't great for your skin, and it has 20 SPF to boot!

7. Belli Anti Chloasma Facial Sunscreen: The Belli line of skin products are made specifically with pregnant women's needs in mind. They are all formulated without ingredients that are considered unsafe during pregnancy like salicylic acid, parabens and phthalates. The facial sunscreen has a tiny bit of tint making it great to wear on it's own, and it also works great under makeup. I really recommend checking out the entire line if you are looking for pregnancy-safe skin care!

8. A Pea in the Pod Maternity Shorts: I wear these shorts at least 3-4 times a week. They don't have a large panel like many other maternity shorts on the market. Instead, they have an elastic waistband that sits below the belly. They are the most comfortable shorts! And, they don't look at all like they are maternity. I would totally wear these when I wasn't pregnant!

9. Tea Tree Oil: As I mentioned, I have been blessed with some pretty bad acne during this pregnancy. The most frustrating thing about pregnancy acne is that it is hormonal and the only real "cure" is giving birth. After researching pregnancy-safe acne treatments, I came across tea tree oil. It is a natural antispetic, and while it hasn't completely cleared up my face, it has helped with the redness and inflammation of my cystic acne. I went to the dermatologist recently and got a prescription for an antibiotic gel and a very expensive cream (most commonly used to treat rosacea). This regimen seemed to work for a couple of weeks, but recently I found the acne getting worse. I went back to using the tea tree oil, and, happily, my skin has started to calm down again!

10. Gilligan & O'Malley Nursing Sleep Bra: I purchased this bra to give some extra support while I sleep at night. It is so comfortable and I can't wait to get more of these to use when I am actually nursing. All of the Gilligan & O'Malley line at Target is so comfy, and I plan on living in their nursing tank tops, night gowns and other sleep/lounge wear once baby is here!

11. Tums: Heartburn has become a daily companion these days. I am lucky in that I don't have it bad enough to warrant a stronger antacid medication, but it is still an unwelcome symptom of pregnancy. I carry a bottle of Tums in my purse and it has been a life-saver! Bonus: they double as a calcium supplement.
